Finding Your Memoir ‘Why’

Writing a memoir takes time, energy, and courage.

And there will be days when you wonder if it’s worth it.

Days when the words won’t come.
Days when you feel like no one will ever read it.
Days when the doubts get loud.

That’s why every memoir writer needs a ‘why.’

Why Your “Why” Matters

Your “why” is the reason you keep writing when it’s hard. It’s what pulls you back to the page after a long week. It’s the heartbeat behind every story you tell.

Without it, writing a memoir can feel like slogging through mud.

With it, you’ll have a clear sense of purpose—something bigger than the frustration of a rough draft or the discomfort of revisiting old wounds.

Questions to Find Your “Why”

If you’re not sure what your why is, ask yourself:

  • Who am I writing this for?
  • What do I hope they’ll feel when they read it?
  • What part of my story do I most want to leave behind?

This One Prompt Can Make All the Difference

Grab a notebook and finish this sentence:

“I’m writing my memoir because…”

Don’t worry about making it profound or perfect. Just write the truth.

Put that sentence somewhere you can see it—your desk, your fridge, the first page of your writing notebook.

Your “Why” Will Carry You

There will still be hard days. But when you remember why you started, you’ll find the strength to keep going.
