Set Your Memoir Goals

I’m a goal-setter. I can’t help myself. At the end of the year, I like to take time to reflect on the year I’ve just lived. What were the high points, low points, and points in between? How far did I get in achieving the goals I set for the year? For my writing especially, I like to assess how much progress I’ve made. Did I get as far as I had hoped on writing my memoir?

This week, as the year comes to a close, I created a new writing goal for the next year:

By the end of the second quarter of 2022, I will have completed the first draft of my memoir.

Sharing Your Memoir Writing Goal

Yikes, did I just put that in writing for you and all the world to see?

I did! By stating my goal in writing (completing my first draft), making it time-bound (by the end of Q2), and sharing it with others (you!), I have exponentially increased the chances that I will achieve it.

Achieving Your Memoir Writing Goal

But as we all know, just saying a goal isn’t enough. The next step is scheduling it. I have 30 minutes of writing time blocked for each morning. My partner knows about my goal, and he is helping to keep me accountable. He asks gentle questions like, “What are you doing this morning?” or, “Are you keeping your morning routine?”

Frankly, knowing he’s going to ask about my writing is motivation enough for me to put in my time even on mornings when I’d rather not. I don’t want to have to tell him I didn’t do my writing. And today, when my answer was, “Yes, I’m writing my memoir,” he gave me a big hug and a “way to go!” Just the right kind of positive reinforcement to keep me going.
